Senator Sean Kean [R-11] called on DEP
Commissioner Lisa Jackson on Tuesday to dredge
the Manasquan River channel adjacent to the
entrance to the Glimmer Glass channel, a
spokesperson told Jersey Shore Angler.
The entrance to the Glimmer Glass, known as
Crabtown Creek, has been blocked from some
directions due to a mounting up of silt and
other materials. In the letter, Senator Kean
explained that silt and sand have accumulated on
a 50-yard stretch of water located within the
marked channel. The silted-in stretch is located
between the red channel marker off Fisherman’s
Cove in Manasquan and the channel entrance.
Depths in the area fall off quickly from the 13
to 20-foot depths in the center of the channel
to less than two feet at some points.
“The state must take immediate action to
alleviate the shoaling problem in this area of
the Manasquan River,” said Senator
Kean. “Failure to address this situation could
result in serious accidents.”
Senator Kean said boaters in the river have
experienced problems during recent low-tides,
including the weekend of July 12 and 13.
“This area of the river generates heavy boat
traffic during the summer season,” said Senator
Kean.
The Monmouth County Republican also stated in
his letter to Jackson, “This issue presents a
public safety hazard that I would urge the
Department of Environmental Protection to
address. For this reason, the Manasquan River
must be dredged as soon as possible to allow
boats to safely navigate this area.”
